Practice Bound: From Campbelltown Hospital to Bathurst
Making the transition from hospital medicine to general practice is a milestone many international doctors aspire to, especially those seeking a more balanced lifestyle, meaningful patient relationships, and long-term stability for their families. For Dr Buddhika, who trained and worked for more than a decade in Sri Lanka before moving to Australia, becoming a GP represents the next chapter in a career built on dedication and a strong commitment to patient care.
A Strong Clinical Foundation in Sri Lanka
After graduating from medical school in 2008, Dr Buddhika spent the next 12 years building extensive clinical experience across Sri Lanka. He completed his internship in Paediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, followed by roles in:
- Preliminary Baby Unit & Neonatal Care
- Outpatient and Emergency Department rotations
- Six years in General Medicine
- Four years in ICU at the National Hospital
Dr Buddhika’s breadth and depth of experience ensured he arrived in Australia with a robust foundation for a future GP career.
Why General Practice? A Better Balance for Work and Life
While working alongside GPs in hospital settings back home, he found himself increasingly drawn to the general practice environment.

“GP work offers a much better work–life balance. No night shifts, more predictable hours, and time to spend with family. It’s a lifestyle that fits well for me.”
The appeal of consistent daytime work and fewer disruptions to family life made general practice the ideal long-term pathway.
A Move Motivated by Family and Future Opportunities
For Dr Buddhika, the decision to relocate to Australia was deeply personal. With political instability affecting his home country, he wanted to secure a safer and more stable future for his two children.
“I considered the UK and Australia, but Australia seemed best for my kids. That’s why we moved.”
Hospital Experience in Australia
Since arriving in Australia, Dr Buddhika has worked across several major hospital settings, gaining exposure to the Australian healthcare system and completing the steps toward general registration:
- Campbelltown Hospital, Sydney: Emergency Department
- Gladstone Hospital, QLD: Emergency and Medical Wards
- Completed AMC Clinical Exam & Achieved General Registration
With general registration achieved, the next step was clear: start the journey toward Fellowship.
Finding the Right GP Practice with DXC Medical
A colleague he had worked with in Campbelltown first introduced him to DXC Medical and, in particular, Senior Consultant Shayla.
He had clear requirements:
- PR sponsorship
- FSP supervision
- An accredited training location
- A supportive practice environment
Initially considering a role in Albury, supervision challenges meant he needed a new solution quickly.
“I discussed everything with Shayla. She understood my needs and found the Bathurst practice for me within two days. It was very quick.”
He accepted the offer and has now commenced at his new practice in Bathurst under the Pre-Fellowship Program, with full Fellowship training to begin in January.
Life in Australia: Settling into Bathurst
Dr Buddhika and his family have been in Australia for nearly three years. His children have recently started at a new school and are already settling in well.
“They missed their old friends, but now they’re very happy. People here are very friendly.”
The family is looking forward to exploring more of Bathurst, a welcoming regional community known for lifestyle and open spaces.
The Transition to GP Work
Like many hospital doctors entering general practice for the first time, the early transition comes with new systems and workflows.
“This setup is new for me, but I’m getting used to it. My supervisor is very helpful, I can call him anytime. Senior doctors are friendly and supportive.”
This supportive environment has helped him gain confidence as he learns the Australian GP model and adjusts to community-based care.
His Advice for Other International Doctors
When asked what guidance he would share with other IMGs considering general practice in Australia, his answer was simple:
“DXC Medical is very helpful. If you give them your requirements, they will analyse everything and find the perfect place. Australia is a good place to practise and spend the rest of your life.”
A Future Built on Stability, Support, and Opportunity
From a decade of broad clinical experience in Sri Lanka to emergency medicine roles across NSW and Queensland, and now stepping confidently into general practice in Bathurst, Dr Buddhika’s journey reflects the determination of many international doctors seeking a better balance, a brighter future, and a meaningful career in Australian primary care.
His transition marks just the beginning, and we’re excited to continue supporting him on his pathway to Fellowship.
