The southernmost capital city in Australia, Hobart offers an enviable blend of city sophistication, heritage charm and natural beauty. It's a location gaining popularity with GPs seeking a unique lifestyle, whether it’s winding down in a quieter city, immersing in the arts, or exploring the stunning Tasmanian natural landscape right on your doorstep.

Hobart and its surrounding suburbs are home to a range of general practices, both corporate and independent, offering career opportunities for vocationally registered GPs, those under moratorium, and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) on training pathways.

Hobart snapshot:

Greater Hobart (including the city and surrounding areas) is home to over 251,000 residents, making it the second least-populous capital in Australia, but one of the fastest-growing in terms of infrastructure and population growth. Health care and social assistance is the city’s largest employment sector, followed by education, retail and public administration.

Known for its crisp air, fresh produce and a burgeoning cultural scene, Hobart is the gateway to the rest of Tasmania, including Bruny Island, the Huon Valley, and world-renowned heritage sites such as Port Arthur. It’s a city that offers a high quality of life without the traffic and high living costs of larger capitals.

With a cool climate and rich colonial history, Hobart provides a charming setting for families and professionals alike. The city offers a range of schooling options, tertiary education through the University of Tasmania, and access to excellent healthcare facilities.

Health system and education:

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and a key employer in the region, offering a wide range of specialised services. General practices in the city and surrounding suburbs are well-supported, with increasing demand for GPs across the region.

The University of Tasmania has a medical school based in Hobart, fostering opportunities for professional development and supervision roles. The city also boasts a strong mix of private and public primary and secondary schools.

Living in Hobart:

From the Salamanca Markets and MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) to the hiking trails of Mount Wellington, Hobart has something for everyone. Its smaller size means less commuting and more time to enjoy life outside of work.

The housing market remains more affordable than mainland capitals, with the added bonus of spectacular waterfront views or mountain backdrops. Many doctors relocating to Hobart appreciate the balance of work and lifestyle that the city provides.

Eligibility for GPs:

Most suburbs in Greater Hobart are classified as Distribution Priority Areas (DPA) and Modified Monash Model (MMM) 2, which means they are eligible for:

  • Any VR GPs including ones under moratorium
  • IMGs under the RACGP PEP Specialist Stream
  • Doctors entering training via AGPT, FSP, ACRRM IP or RVTS pathways

Surrounding areas worth exploring:

While Hobart itself offers plenty, neighbouring regions such as Kingston, Sorell, New Norfolk, and the Huon Valley also offer general practice opportunities, with even more peaceful settings and strong community ties. These semi-rural and rural communities often have a high demand for GPs and provide excellent opportunities for long-term placements.
