GP Journeys: From Abu Dhabi to Dubbo

GP Journeys: From Abu Dhabi to Dubbo

  • December 9, 2024

Dr Muhammad ‘Imran’ Khan recently transitioned from the major international city of Abu Dhabi to the regional town of Dubbo, New South Wales. With over 15 years of experience as a GP in Pakistan and the UAE, Dr Khan has joined Western Plains Medical & Dental Centre (ForHealth), bringing a wealth of expertise to his new community.

Dr Khan’s medical career began after completing his degree in Pakistan, where he worked in rural areas as a GP. Following this, he spent three years in the US conducting research in nephrology before returning home to be closer to his family when his father became sick. In 2012, he moved to the UAE, where he practised as a GP and completed his MRCGP International in 2022.

Eager for a new challenge, Dr Khan pursued opportunities in Australia through the RACGP Specialist Pathway. He connected with DXC Medical in March 2024 and worked closely with our team to navigate the recruitment process. Within seven months, Dr Khan successfully secured a role in Dubbo, overcoming challenges such as visa applications and AHPRA registration.

“Jessica and Shayla from DXC Medical were incredible throughout the process,” said Dr Khan. “Their expertise and constant support made a complex journey much easier. I’m deeply grateful for their help.”

Dr Khan began his new role in November, where he has been warmly welcomed by the team at Western Plains Medical & Dental Centre. The practice has provided invaluable support, including initial accommodation and assistance with settling into life in Dubbo. The town itself has welcomed him with open arms, offering a sense of community he finds both fulfilling and motivating.

Dr Khan highlighted the critical need for GPs in Dubbo, where patient demand often results in long wait times for appointments. “The community is so grateful and appreciative, which makes the work even more rewarding. Knowing I’m helping to address a real need is incredibly fulfilling,” he shared. While adjusting to a new healthcare system has been a learning curve, Dr Khan has appreciated the supportive environment at the practice, where his team has helped him gradually build his patient load.

Relocating from a fast-paced city to a regional town has been a significant adjustment for Dr Khan, but one he has embraced. He describes Dubbo as a charming and open place with a strong sense of community. While he’s still exploring, he’s eager to visit local attractions such as Taronga Western Plains Zoo and is looking forward to his family joining him in the future, including his daughter, who plans to pursue studies in beauty therapy in Australia.

As he settles into his new life, Dr Khan is focused on completing his RACGP fellowship and is enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead. “This has been a rewarding journey, and I’m excited about what the future holds in Dubbo,” he reflected.

We wish Dr Khan all the best as he continues his career in Dubbo.

From the heart of Khartoum to the peaceful coastline of Bunbury, my path through medicine has been one of resilience, reinvention, and rediscovery. As a general practitioner with a career spanning three countries, multiple systems, and countless stories of care, I’ve come to learn that healing is not only about clinical expertise, it’s about building trust, community, and connection wherever you go.
