GP Journeys: From Dubai to Busselton, WA

GP Journeys: From Dubai to Busselton, WA

At DXC Medical, we love sharing the inspiring journeys of the GPs we’ve had the privilege of supporting. Recently, we sat down with Dr Imran, a GP who relocated from Dubai to Busselton, Western Australia. His story is one of careful planning and the desire to make a difference, all while navigating a new country, system, and culture.

A Global Journey in Medicine

“I graduated and trained in Pakistan, where I practiced medicine for nearly a decade,” Dr Imran explains. “In 2016, I moved to Dubai, where I continued working as a General Practitioner. During that time, I also completed my MRCGP (INT).”

While researching opportunities online, Dr Imran came across a YouTube video from Emergency Focus with Dr Rizwan, which opened his eyes to the possibility of working in Australia. “That video changed everything. I reached out to him, and he guided me through the RACGP equivalency process. From there, I was introduced to the DXC Medical team.”

The First Steps with DXC Medical

Dr Imran recalls his first conversation with DXC Medical’s Senior Recruitment Consultant, Adelene. “She was wonderful. She took the time to understand my background and what I was looking for, even though, honestly, I didn’t know much about Australia at the time. I only knew of Sydney, and Melbourne.”

After some online research, Western Australia stood out. “It felt closer to home, both culturally and geographically. I was drawn to the natural environment, the lifestyle, and the fact that it’s only a direct flight away from Dubai and Pakistan.”

Soon after, Adelene connected Dr Imran with an opportunity with Brecken Health in Busselton. “Within days of my interview, I had a letter of offer, and I didn’t look back. The DXC Medical team, including Jess and Bec, were always there. I was constantly supported, even through WhatsApp updates. That meant a lot.”

Making the Move to Australia

Leaving behind the heat of Dubai for the cooler climate of WA, Dr Imran recalls a dramatic welcome. “It was 49 degrees when I left Dubai. I landed in Perth, and it was 13 degrees and pouring rain. But I was prepared, jackets, accommodation booked, rental car sorted, everything.”

With Adelene’s help, Dr Imran had also pre-arranged essentials like his ABN and other registrations. “They may seem like small things, but they make a big difference when you’re starting over in a new place.”

Why General Practice?

Having worked in emergency medicine, Dr Imran realised the long hours and constant intensity weren’t sustainable. “As a GP, you still help people, but you build ongoing relationships, see families grow, and you can enjoy a better work-life balance. That’s what really drew me to general practice.”

Why Busselton?

“Honestly, I didn’t know much about towns outside of Perth. But as a Muslim, I had two key concerns: finding Halal food and being relatively close to home for travel. Busselton, being about 2.5 hours from Perth, was perfect.”

He adds, “Everyone wants to be in a major city, but as an international GP, you need to work in MMM2 or higher areas. Busselton is MMM3, and it ticked all the boxes for me.”

Moving forward

Dr Imran has quickly embraced his new environment. “I haven’t met other Pakistanis or Indians here yet, but the local community is welcoming. And I’ve connected with another GP who also came through DXC, he’s been a great guide.”

While he hasn’t had time to explore much, he recently made it down to Margaret River. “It was more beautiful than the videos, just breathtaking”.

Dr Imran is still settling in and hasn’t had much free time, but he’s excited to eventually join a local cricket club and make new friends.

His advice for others considering the move?

“The first few weeks are busy, lots of paperwork, learning new systems, and adjusting to a new life, but if you really want this life, go for it, just plan well”.

Thank you, Dr Imran for sharing your inspiring story with us. We’re so glad to have supported you on your journey to Western Australia and wish you all the best as you settle into life in Busselton.
