GP Journeys: From Dubai to Maryborough

Dr Geoffrey Zachariah’s journey from Dubai to Maryborough in Queensland is a story of seeking a better family lifestyle and embracing a slower pace of life. Dr Zachariah recently made the move from the major international city of Dubai to the quiet regional Queensland town of Maryborough with his wife and two children, where he’s discovered a deeper sense of fulfilment, both personally and professionally.

Dr Zachariah’s medical journey began after graduating from medical school in the Philippines in 2007. He then returned to his homeland of India to practice medicine, before relocating to Dubai in 2015, where he worked as a general practitioner. Aiming to further his expertise, he completed the MRCGP (International) South Asia edition in 2018 and later expanded his specialisation to family medicine.

Reflecting on his years in Dubai, he described the demanding schedule, often working late into the evening and struggling to find time for family life. “This is my first-ever weekend off after 15 years in practice,” he said, adding that the chance to experience better work-life balance was a major motivator in choosing Australia.

When Dr Zachariah decided to pursue a career in Australia, he initially planned to sit the Australian Medical Council (AMC) exams. However, when the RACGP Specialist Pathway reopened for MRCGP-qualified doctors, he saw an opportunity and reached out to DXC Medical for guidance.

Through Brad and Jessica at DXC, he received invaluable support in selecting the best role and location for his goals. After numerous interviews and careful consideration, he chose Francis Family Doctors in Maryborough, a decision he made with confidence, thanks to Brad’s thoughtful advice. “Brad felt more like a friend than a recruiter, walking me through each option’s pros and cons,” said Dr Zachariah.

The adjustment to Maryborough has introduced the Zachariah family to a slower pace of life, which Dr Zachariah describes as a welcome contrast to the hustle of Dubai. “By 5pm, the town winds down entirely, it’s a big change after living in such a huge city. The town itself is so picturesque, it’s like a scene from a Hallmark movie. The people are also wonderful, I’ve never been somewhere where every person is so friendly and welcoming.”

While Maryborough’s quiet evenings are a significant shift, the family has embraced the change. His children are adapting well, enjoying their new school and exploring nearby attractions such as the nearby coastal town of Hervey Bay.

Dr Zachariah’s wife is also making the most of their new life, undertaking study in mental health qualifications aligned with her interest in Australia’s mental health sector. With their youngest child starting school in January, she plans to explore local career opportunities as well.

At Francis Family Doctors, Dr Zachariah has been warmly welcomed by the team, finding particular support from his supervisor, Dr Tom Dunn. “Dr Dunn and the staff have been really accommodating,” he noted. “It’s a supportive environment where I can walk into my supervisor’s office with any question, and he’s always ready to help.”

Professionally, Dr Zachariah is adjusting to the nuances of Australia’s healthcare system, which differs considerably from Dubai’s private insurance-driven model. While the learning curve is steep, he’s enthusiastic about Australia’s approach to healthcare and plans to enhance his skills further. Noticing the need for specialised care in his area, he’s exploring additional qualifications in skin cancer and palliative care, which are in high demand given Queensland’s aging population.

“With an older demographic, palliative care and skin cancer treatment are essential in this community,” he observed.

Reflecting on his transition, Dr. Zachariah is deeply grateful for the support he received from DXC Medical, describing it as “a collaborative experience” rather than just a recruitment process.

“Brad was there whenever I needed him, helping with everything from interviews to deciding on our new town,” he shared.

We wish Dr Zachariah and his family all the best as they settle into their new life in Maryborough, Queensland. If you’re considering a GP role in regional Australia, explore our Vacancy Map and Search Jobs functions to find the perfect fit for your career and lifestyle.
