GP Journeys: From Egypt to Bordertown, SA

When Dr Mahmoud Abada arrived in Bordertown, he stepped into more than just a new job, he stepped into a community ready to welcome him with open arms. Now practising at Tatiara Medical Clinic, Dr Abada has already begun making a positive impact, and his story reflects the commitment and global experience he brings to regional general practice.

A Global Path to Medicine

Dr Abada’s medical journey is one that spans continents, cultures, and healthcare systems.

Born and raised in Egypt, he grew up surrounded by medicine, both of his parents were doctors, shaping his early understanding of what it means to serve a community. After completing his education in Saudi Arabia, he and his family moved to Canada in 1997, although he later returned to Egypt to complete his medical degree.

Over the years, Dr Abada gained broad experience working across Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada. This international exposure refined not only his clinical skills but also his commitment to patient-centred, preventive healthcare.

A Passion for Preventive Medicine

At Tatiara Medical Clinic, Dr Abada is practising general medicine with a strong focus on prevention.

“One of the most important things in general practice is preventive medicine, vaccination, health education, promoting healthy lifestyles, and understanding what to avoid,” he shared.

He believes prevention should always come before treatment. “Sometimes taking small steps toward better health can save you from future complications, medications, surgeries, and worry.”

Alongside preventive care, Dr Abada continues to hold strong interests in emergency medicine, trauma care, and maternity care.

Choosing Australia

After attempting to return to Canada last year, Dr Abada ultimately chose Australia, a decision shaped by the country’s healthcare opportunities and the new pathways available to international doctors.

For Dr Abada, the RACGP’s PEP Specialist Pathway (partially comparable) became the key that opened the door. This pathway recognises overseas-trained specialists whose qualifications and experience are considered partially comparable to Australian standards, allowing them to begin supervised practice while working toward Fellowship.

It provided a clear, structured route for Dr Abada to enter the Australian healthcare system, continue practising at a high level, and progress toward full specialist recognition.

“I felt incredibly fortunate that the Australian healthcare system had introduced new pathways that make it possible for doctors from so many parts of the world to continue their careers here.” he said.

He describes his transition as “very, very comfortable,” supported by Brad and the team at DXC Medical, strong community support, and a warm welcome from both colleagues and locals.

“Any time I need help or support, everyone is there. I’m very fortunate and very happy with that.”

The Unexpected Joys of Bordertown

For Dr Abada, the quieter pace and natural beauty of Bordertown have been unexpected joys.

He speaks fondly of the walking trails, the gardens, and the greenery that line the streets, a contrast to his time living in Egypt, the UAE, and Ottawa.

“It’s beautiful when we walk around and see the flowers in front of people’s houses. I like that a lot.”

While his wife, a nurse, and their children are still overseas, Dr Abada is hopeful they will join him in Australia soon. For now, he is embracing his new community and looking forward to contributing to both the clinic and the local hospital.

A New Chapter Begins

Dr Mahmoud Abada’s story is one of determination, adaptability, and heart. From the Middle East to North America and now to regional South Australia, he has carried with him a commitment to care.

His journey is a powerful reminder of the meaningful impact international doctors make in regional communities, and how the right support can help them thrive.

We’re thrilled to have supported Dr Abada as he begins this new chapter in Bordertown.

Welcome to Australia, Dr Abada, the Bordertown community is very lucky to have you.
