GP Journeys: From Oman to Albury, NSW

For many international doctors, the journey to Australia is more than a career move, it’s a life decision shaped by family, opportunity, and the desire to grow within a world-class healthcare system.

For Dr Chathushka, that journey has taken her from Sri Lanka, through Oman, and now to regional New South Wales, where she has recently commenced her new role in Albury.

A Career Built on Community Care

Dr Chathushka completed her medical degree at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka, graduating in 2007 before finishing her internship in 2008.

Early in her career, she worked across a variety of hospital rotations, but it was her experience in public health that shaped her future direction.

“I realised I really enjoyed community-based care, preventive health, maternal care, immunisations, school health. It wasn’t just about treating illness, but identifying issues early and supporting people before they become unwell.”

This passion for preventive care, patient relationships, and community involvement naturally led her into general practice, offering both professional fulfilment and a better work-life balance as a parent.

From Oman to Australia

Before relocating to Australia, Dr Chathushka spent seven years working as a GP in Oman.

While professionally rewarding, there were challenges, particularly around language barriers and long-term planning for her daughters’ education.

“I had a comfortable life in Oman, but I wanted to experience a healthcare system with strong standards and structure, and Australia offers that.”

With family already in Australia and a desire to provide new opportunities for her children, the decision to relocate became clear.

Why Albury?

Initially considering other locations within Australia, Dr Chathushka’s perspective shifted after connecting with the DXC Medical team.

Introduced through a colleague and supported by Nethmi and Rebecca, she was guided through both the opportunity and the process.

“I thought the process would be complicated and overwhelming, but they handled everything. It made such a difference.”

She secured a GP role in Albury, NSW, a thriving regional centre known for its strong sense of community and lifestyle balance.

The Journey to Practice

Dr Chathushka’s transition to Australia was carefully managed, with each stage progressing smoothly:

Placement Timeline:

  • First contact: June 2025
  • Interview arranged: July 2025
  • Role secured & agreement signed: July 2025
  • AHPRA application submitted: August 2025
  • AHPRA registration granted: October 2025
  • Visa approved: December 2025
  • Relocated from Oman with her two daughters: January 2026
  • Commenced work in Albury: February 2026

Settling into Life in Albury

Since arriving in Australia, Dr Chathushka and her daughters have embraced both the professional and lifestyle opportunities that come with regional living.

“The people here are incredibly friendly and welcoming; I didn’t expect that level of support. Even patients help me adjust, recommending shops, how to dress for colder weather, and places to visit.”

From exploring local parks and rivers to discovering new activities like pickleball, the family is gradually building their new life.

And for her daughters?

“They wanted to experience winter, so this is perfect for them!”

Practising in the Australian Healthcare System

Working in Australian general practice has brought new challenges, and new rewards.

“GP work here is very diverse. It’s not just illness, we’re involved in mental health, aged care, workplace health, and preventive care.”

She has also noticed Australia’s strong focus on early intervention, particularly in mental health.

“Patients seek help earlier, for advice and support, and I think that’s a really positive system.”

With a growing elderly population, she finds particular joy in the relationships she’s building with patients.

“I love the conversations we have, they hold your hand and talk. That really makes my day.”

Advice for Other International GPs

Having experienced the process firsthand, Dr Chathushka has one clear message for other doctors considering the move:

“The right support makes all the difference.
Trying to manage everything alone can delay the process, but having the right guidance makes it smooth and much less stressful.”

A New Chapter

Now settled in Albury and enjoying both her work and lifestyle, Dr Chathushka’s journey is a great example of what’s possible with the right support, planning, and mindset.

From Sri Lanka to Oman, and now Australia, her story highlights the opportunities available for international GPs ready to take the next step.
