GP Journeys: From Oman to Hamilton, VIC

Moving to a new country to continue a medical career is a big step, and Dr. Pubuduni Panangala’s journey from Oman to Hamilton, Victoria, is a wonderful example of determination, preparation, and support. With the guidance of DXC Medical, Dr. Pubuduni successfully transitioned her career and settled her family into a welcoming community, demonstrating that international GPs can thrive in Australia with the right support.

Personal Background

Dr. Pubuduni began her medical journey at the University of Science and Technology, Chittagong, Bangladesh, where she obtained her MBBS degree. She then returned to Sri Lanka, serving diverse communities for over seven years in both general practice and hospital medicine, which gave her a strong foundation of clinical experience and resilience. Following this, she spent two and a half years practicing in Oman, gaining valuable exposure to different healthcare systems and patient needs. In July 2024, she achieved her MRCGP qualification through the Royal College of General Practitioners UK, a milestone that reflects her commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Although moving to Australia was not initially part of her plan, Dr. Pubuduni’s sister was already living in the country, and the idea of relocating gradually became more appealing.

The Decision to Move

Dr. Pubuduni’s decision to move to Australia was influenced by both professional and family considerations. She wanted to grow in her career while providing her children with the opportunity to experience a balanced lifestyle. Her husband, who holds higher education in agriculture, also saw Australia as an excellent place for his career.

When introduced to Hamilton Family Practice by DXC Medical, Dr. Pubuduni initially had some doubts, but with guidance and encouragement from  DXC Medical’s Nethmi Fernando, she accepted the opportunity. Hamilton, with its welcoming community and countryside charm, offered the perfect balance of professional opportunity and family-friendly living.

The Transition Process

Relocating internationally and navigating registration processes is never straightforward, but Dr. Pubuduni received steady guidance from DXC Medical throughout. From first contacting DXC in October 2024, completing her AHPRA registration in April 2025, to securing her visa just two business days after applying in May 2025, the support she received made the transition smooth and efficient.

The DXC team, particularly Nethmi and a special mention to Jessica and Rebecca, who were instrumental in assisting Dr. Pubuduni with her paperwork and verifications.

Professional Experience

Now working at Hamilton Family Practice, Dr. Pubuduni has found her experience in Australia highly rewarding. The Australian healthcare system places a strong emphasis on preventive care, patient education, and continuity of care, offering her new opportunities to develop long-term relationships with patients and their families.

Family & Lifestyle

Dr. Pubuduni and her husband moved to Hamilton with their two young sons, aged seven and five. The family has adapted well, with the children enjoying school, outdoor activities, and the space to grow. Her husband has also embraced opportunities in agriculture in the region.

The Hamilton community’s warmth has made settling in welcoming experience for the family. They enjoy the peaceful countryside, local parks, and family-friendly activities, making Hamilton feel like home.

A little about Hamilton

Hamilton, in south-west Victoria, is a vibrant regional town of around 10,000 people and is classified as MMM 4 and a Distribution Priority Area (DPA). For international medical graduates (IMGs), this makes it an attractive location to build a GP career, with easier access to Medicare provider numbers, government incentive schemes, and professional support programs. The town also offers a well-equipped hospital, modern medical facilities, and allied health services, providing both variety and support in daily practice.

Living in Hamilton means enjoying a relaxed regional lifestyle with affordable housing, quality schools, and a close-knit community, while still having access to cultural amenities and nearby natural attractions like the Grampians and Great Ocean Road. The combination of professional opportunities and lifestyle benefits makes Hamilton an excellent choice for GPs looking to establish themselves in Australia.

Reflections & Advice

The biggest adjustment for Dr. Pubuduni was learning the nuances of the Australian healthcare system, but with DXC Medical’s guidance, she felt supported throughout. She advises other international GPs not to be discouraged by the relocation process, patience, preparation, and the right guidance can make the move life-changing.

DXC Medical’s Perspective

At DXC Medical, we are delighted to have supported Dr. Pubuduni on her journey to Hamilton. It has been a privilege to assist her through each stage of the process and to see her and her family settle so well into the community. We wish her every success in her career at Hamilton Family Practice and look forward to seeing the positive impact she will continue to make in the lives of her patients.

If you’re a GP considering a move to Australia, our team would love to help you explore your options and find the right opportunity for you and your family.
