GP Journeys: From Oman to Horsham, Victoria

GP Journeys: From Oman to Horsham, Victoria

  • January 16, 2026

Relocating internationally as a GP is a major life decision, one that requires commitment, careful planning, and the right support. For Dr Shanika, the move from Oman to regional Victoria was a thoughtfully planned journey that came together smoothly and efficiently, allowing her to settle quickly into both her new role and community.

Now living and working in Horsham, Dr Shanika shares her story of training, transition, and what life looks like on the other side of the move.

Medical Background & Early Career

Dr Shanika is a Sri Lankan graduate from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. Following her internship, she spent five years working across both general practice and hospital settings in Sri Lanka, gaining broad clinical exposure.

She later completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Medicine through the University of Colombo, before relocating to Oman. There, she worked as a GP for three years and progressed her goal of moving to Australia by completing AMC Part 1 and the MRCGP (International) South Asia, which provided access to the PEP Specialist Pathway.

“General practice appealed to me because it offers a good work–life balance while still allowing for a strong and sustainable career.”

Why Australia, and Why Horsham?

Australia stood out as a long-term destination for Dr Shanika and her family.

“Australia offers a secure life, the opportunity for citizenship, a strong education system for children, and a good quality of life overall.”

When exploring locations, Horsham emerged as the right fit. Classified as an MMM3 location, Horsham offered the balance she was looking for.

“It’s a regional town with all essential facilities, major supermarkets, good schools nearby, and a climate that isn’t too cold or too warm.”

From First Contact to Placement

Dr Shanika’s first point of contact with DXC Medical was in June, after being referred by friends who had previously used the service.

From there, the process moved quickly and efficiently. An interview was organised with Horsham Medical Group, and within just two weeks, Dr Shanika secured the role.

Key milestones followed shortly after:

  • AHPRA registration approved: 14 October
  • Visa granted: 11 November
  • Arrival in Australia: 16 December

From initial contact to arrival, the end-to-end process took approximately six months.

“The process moved smoothly because everything was well coordinated, and I made sure to follow timelines and complete all paperwork promptly.”

Navigating the Registration & Relocation Process

While the overall journey was seamless, there were a few challenges along the way, including an issue obtaining a Certificate of Good Standing from Oman during the AHPRA registration stage.

“Whenever I faced challenges, I received excellent support. Rebecca helped me at every step, often going above and beyond by reviewing previous cases and seeking additional professional advice.”

Dr Shanika credits the close guidance and clear communication from DXC Medical, in particular Nethmi Fernando, as a key reason the move progressed without major delays.

Working in Australian General Practice

Dr Shanika is now working at Horsham Medical Group as a GP Registrar on the PEP Specialist Pathway, while continuing her training with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

She describes the Australian healthcare system as a significant step up from her previous experience.

“The system here is highly organised, fully computerised, and consistently aligned with the latest clinical guidelines.”

What has stood out most is the ability to practise medicine within a world-class framework.

“It’s very rewarding to work in a system where you can truly apply evidence-based medical knowledge.”

She is currently developing special interests in gynaecology and mental health, areas she hopes to expand on further as her career progresses.

Settling into Life in Horsham

Since arriving in December, Dr Shanika and her family have been settling into life in Horsham and enjoying the lifestyle the region offers.

“It’s a very friendly community. People, including colleagues and patients, are welcoming, respectful, and supportive.”

Her family has especially embraced the outdoor lifestyle.

“They love the natural environment and the spacious garden at our home.”

Local highlights include surrounding farms, wheat fields, and walks along the Wimmera River, which have quickly become part of everyday life.

Reflections & Advice for Other International GPs

Adjusting to a new healthcare system while managing family life without extended support has been the biggest personal challenge, but one Dr Shanika feels well prepared for.

Her advice to other international GPs is clear:

“DXC Medical is a very friendly and supportive team who guide you through every step. Proper guidance is essential; there are unfortunately fraudulent agencies that put doctors at risk by recommending unsuitable clinics.”

When asked if she would recommend the journey she’s taken, her answer is an easy yes.

“I always had the correct guidance through a very complex process. I’m truly grateful to the DXC team for their support.”
