Dr Sumera’s Journey to Coastal General Practice in Australia.

Relocating to a new country is never just about a job.
It’s about building a future, for your career, your family, and your lifestyle.

For Dr Sumera, that journey has taken her from Pakistan to the coastal community of Hervey Bay in Queensland, where she is now settling into both a new role and a new way of life.

A Career Built on Community Care

With over 15 years of experience as a General Practitioner in Pakistan, Dr Sumera brings a strong foundation in patient-centred care.

Her background includes working within the Healthcare Services Department at PARCO, where she delivered comprehensive healthcare to employees and their families.

This experience shaped her approach to medicine, focused on:

  • Long-term patient relationships
  • Chronic disease management
  • Preventative and community-based care

It’s also what drew her to general practice in the first place.

“I was inspired to become a GP because of my passion for patient-centred and holistic care. It allows me to build meaningful relationships and contribute to the well-being of the community.”

Why Australia?

Like many international GPs, Dr Sumera’s decision to move to Australia was driven by both professional ambition and the opportunity for growth.

Having completed MRCGP Int (South Asia), she made the move via the RACGP Practice Experience Program – Specialist Pathway (PEP SP), with the goal of achieving Fellowship (FRACGP).

“My primary motivation was to pursue FRACGP and enhance my professional skills within a globally respected healthcare system.”

Australia’s structured pathways, high clinical standards, and supportive GP environment made it a natural next step.

Choosing Hervey Bay

When it came to location, lifestyle played just as important a role as career.

Hervey Bay offered the perfect balance.

Known for its relaxed coastal setting, family-friendly community, and access to natural beauty, it provided everything Dr Sumera and her family were looking for.

“I chose Hervey Bay for its welcoming community, excellent work-life balance, and beautiful coastal environment.”

Navigating the Move to Australia

The pathway to practising in Australia is detailed and often complex.

For Dr Sumera, the process involved:

  • RACGP pathway requirements
  • AHPRA registration
  • Visa and relocation planning
  • Adapting to a new healthcare system

“The process was comprehensive and required careful planning. While challenging, it was well-structured and ultimately rewarding.”

Support throughout the process

Having the right support can make all the difference.

Dr Sumera connected with DXC Medical through Emergency Focus, and from there, worked closely with Brad and the team throughout her journey.

From identifying the right role to navigating registration, compliance, and relocation, support was provided across every stage, including:

  • Securing the right practice fit
  • Coordinating interviews and contracts
  • AHPRA and RACGP guidance
  • Visa and relocation preparation
  • Medicare, TFN/ABN, and compliance setup
  • Family settlement and local integration

“DXC Medical acted as a bridge throughout my journey, supporting me at every step, from initial enquiries to settling into my new role.”

Life as a GP in Hervey Bay

Dr Sumera is now working as a GP at Primary Care Medical Clinic, delivering comprehensive, patient-centred care in a supportive team environment.

Her work includes:

  • Preventative health
  • Chronic disease management
  • Patient education
  • Community-focused care

She has found the Australian healthcare system to be both structured and empowering.

“It is highly efficient and patient-focused, with strong multidisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based practice.”

What Stands Out Most

One of the biggest differences Dr Sumera has noticed is the level of integration across the healthcare system.

“Collaboration with specialists, allied health professionals, and support services ensures continuity of care and improves patient outcomes.”

The strong emphasis on preventative care and patient empowerment has also been a highlight.

A Smooth Transition for the Whole Family

Relocating internationally is a big step, especially with a family.

For Dr Sumera, the transition has been a positive one.

“With the strong support provided and a welcoming local community, settling into our new environment was seamless.”

Outside of work, the family is already embracing the lifestyle that Hervey Bay offers.

Favourite local spots include:

  • The Hervey Bay Esplanade and beaches
  • Wetside Water Park
  • Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum
  • Nearby Maryborough
  • K’gari (Fraser Island)

Advice for Other International GPs

For those considering the move, Dr Sumera’s advice is clear:

“Pursue this opportunity with confidence and determination. The process requires preparation, but the rewards are significant.”

She encourages GPs to:

  • Stay organised
  • Seek expert guidance
  • Remain committed to their goals

“Australia offers excellent professional development, a supportive healthcare system, and an outstanding quality of life.”
