GP Journeys: From Pakistan to Maryborough, QLD

Dr Nadeem Khawaja’s story is one of legacy and a deep-rooted passion for General Practice.

From his early training at two of Pakistan’s most prestigious institutions, King Edward Medical College and Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC), to his current journey of becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), his career has been shaped by both personal inspiration and professional ambition.

With 31 years of GP experience, including running his own medical clinic since 1993, he further advanced his qualifications by completing the MRCGP International (South Asia) before embarking on the RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway in Australia.

Dr Nadeem began his medical journey in Lahore, graduating in 1991. Unlike many of his peers, Dr Nadeem always knew he wanted to pursue general practice, inspired deeply by his father, a well-respected GP who was pivotal in pioneering Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Lahore. “I grew up watching the satisfaction my father received from helping people. That sense of fulfillment left a lasting impression,” he shared.

Although he had never worked outside of Pakistan, a visit to Australia in 2002 planted a seed that would grow into a major life decision. Years later, Dr Nadeem made the decision to relocate to Australia in pursuit of professional growth, modern healthcare infrastructure, and the opportunity to become a RACGP Fellow.

With support from friends who had already made the move, especially Dr Shazia Hassan, Dr Nadeem connected with DXC Medical. Dr Shazia, who was previously placed at Francis Family Doctors in Maryborough, QLD by Brad Bilinsky, referred Dr Nadeem after her own positive experience.

Dr Nadeem was also introduced to Francis Family Doctors, he was immediately impressed “Between the location and the supportive team, Maryborough felt like the right place to begin this exciting new journey,” he said. Dr Nadeem also added “DXC were extremely helpful, in particular Brad and Jessica; I couldn’t fault their communication.”

Like many international doctors, Dr Nadeem found the relocation and registration process arduous. From English language testing to health exams, documentation, and IT skills. “I was not very confident with computers, but the DXC Medical team was extremely supportive. They walked me through everything, step-by-step,” he said.

DXC helped with the necessary on-boarding process, including successfully completing Dr Nadeem’s PEP Specialist application with the RACGP, secure AHPRA registration, accommodations, relocation support and his Medicare provider number.

Dr Nadeem was quick to observe key differences between the healthcare systems in Pakistan and Australia. “The level of electronic integration within Australia’s healthcare system is significantly more advanced." he explained. From automated vaccination reminders to a seamless referral system for specialists, Dr Nadeem is impressed by the efficiency and interconnectivity of Australian healthcare.

Dr Nadeem also noted his appreciation for Australia’s annual requirement of 50 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a quality driven standard, ensuring doctors remain current with evolving medical practices.

Now in Maryborough, Dr Nadeem is easing into his new environment. He spent his first few weeks observing clinic operations, sitting in with nurses and doctors to understand the systems in place. He’s set to begin his own patient consultations and is embracing the personal adjustments that come with moving countries.

He’s already taken time to explore the local area, visiting Hervey Bay and landmarks like the Mary Poppins statue and the historic cricket ground, Newtown Oval. “I’m looking forward to playing some cricket,” he said. “I love the weather here, and the access to fresh produce is fantastic. Maryborough is a beautiful town with so much to offer.”

To fellow international doctors considering a move to Australia, Dr Nadeem offers sound advice: “It depends on your drive to learn and grow. You must understand the lifestyle and healthcare system beforehand, but the journey is absolutely worth it.”

As he begins this new chapter, Dr Nadeem is looking forward to balancing his professional goals with a fulfilling life in regional Queensland. He remains focused on completing his fellowship and continuing the legacy of service his father began decades ago.

We wish Dr Nadeem all the best as he begins this exciting new journey in Maryborough.
