GP Journeys: From Saudi Arabia to Bunbury, WA

GP Journeys: From Saudi Arabia to Bunbury, WA

  • July 15, 2025

From the heart of Khartoum to the peaceful coastline of Bunbury, my path through medicine has been one of resilience, reinvention, and rediscovery. As a general practitioner with a career spanning three countries, multiple systems, and countless stories of care, I’ve come to learn that healing is not only about clinical expertise, it’s about building trust, community, and connection wherever you go.

The Beginning: Building a Foundation in Sudan

My journey began in Sudan, where I earned my MBBS from the University of Juba in 2004, then went on to complete the Clinical Doctorate in Family Medicine from the Sudan Medical Specialisation Board, which gave me rich exposure to a range of rotations, from paediatrics to geriatrics. It was in these formative years that I discovered the true spirit of general practice: the ability to care for patients in all life stages, across diverse contexts, with compassion and continuity.

Stepping Stones: Saudi Arabia and the MRCGP

After moving to Saudi Arabia, I worked for several years as a full-time family physician at both public and private healthcare institutions. My role included primary care and healthcare quality coordination and supervision. The experience refined my clinical judgment and introduced me to systems-focused improvement. I also completed the MRCGP [INT] through the UK’s Royal College of General Practitioners in 2024, a milestone that solidified my professional standing and international readiness.

Choosing Australia: Why Bunbury Became Home

The decision to relocate to Australia stemmed from a desire for better educational and lifestyle opportunities for my children, as well as a professional environment that values continuity of care, evidence-based medicine, and work–life balance. We moved to Bunbury, Western Australia in April 2025, and quickly felt at home.

Why Bunbury? Because it’s a town that offers both tranquillity and opportunity. We were looking for a place with good schools, a welcoming community, and a strong healthcare network, and Bunbury delivered all of that and more.

With Support Comes Strength: The Role of DXC Medical

I first came across DXC Medical through LinkedIn, where I connected with Adelene, who was warm, professional, and reassuring. From there, Jess supported me every step of the way, from AHPRA registration and provider number logistics to local orientation and emotional encouragement. DXC Medical became more than just a recruitment agency, they were true partners in my transition. No question went unanswered, and no worry ever felt too small.

Settling Into Practice: A New Chapter

I currently work as a general practitioner in a practice that combines high standards of care with a culture of collaboration. The team is diverse, patient-centred, and deeply committed to continuing education. Coming from systems in Sudan and Saudi Arabia, I find the Australian healthcare model to be refreshingly structured and supportive of general practice as a long-term, holistic discipline.

What do I find most rewarding? The level of patient engagement and trust. Here, patients are empowered to be part of their health journey, and I feel valued not just as a provider, but as a partner in that journey.

Professional Passions and Future Goals

I've always had a passion for chronic disease management, particularly diabetes care, and I’m now exploring avenues in Aboriginal health and women’s health, two areas where GP impact is profound. I am also looking to expand my skills in mental health and adolescent care, areas that are increasingly relevant in general practice and where early intervention can make a lasting difference.

Family, Lifestyle, and New Discoveries

For our family, Bunbury has been more than a destination, it’s a lifestyle change. My children love the local parks, beaches, and their new school. We’ve enjoyed exploring the stunning coastline from Perth to Margaret River, discovering charming towns, scenic lookouts, and family-friendly spots along the way. The sense of safety, space, and natural beauty here is something we deeply cherish.

Reflections: Lessons and Advice for Fellow GPs

The biggest adjustment? Shifting from a hierarchical, fast-paced environment to one where patient autonomy and system structure are central. It’s a good change, but it requires mental flexibility and openness.

To international GPs considering the move: do it. But do it with preparation, realistic expectations, and the support of an experienced agency like DXC Medical. The road may be long, but the destination is worth it, professionally and personally.

Would I recommend this journey? Absolutely. For me, it’s been the perfect blend of growth, grounding, and giving back.
