GP Journeys: From South Africa to Margaret River, WA

For one South African-trained doctor, the decision to relocate to Australia was not taken lightly, but it has turned into a rewarding journey filled with new professional experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and meaningful connections.

With a medical journey that began at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, this doctor’s career has been marked by dedication to both learning and service. After completing three years of compulsory work as a junior doctor, first as an intern and then a community service doctor, she pursued a Diploma in Anaesthetics in Port Elizabeth. But it was in 2016 that her true path began, embarking on a four-year specialty in Family Medicine through the University of Stellenbosch and the Colleges of Medicine South Africa.

"I consider myself more of a rural generalist,” she shares. “I enjoy all aspects of medicine and really like to be part of a patient’s journey.”

With friends and family already making the move abroad, the idea of relocating to Australia began to take shape. She started looking into how her qualifications would be recognised and what opportunities might be available.

The town of Margaret River stood out not only for its reputation “everyone we spoke to said it was amazing” but also for its proximity to family and accessibility for future visits home. It was through an online search that she discovered DXC. "They responded to an email in a way that we liked. From there, they helped us with every step along the way."

Thanks in large part to DXC’s guidance, particularly Adelene and Jessica, it was a smooth process from start to finish. “They literally guided me through the whole process, helped with forms, sorted through documents. I could not have managed without them.”

Now working in Margaret River and Augusta as a rural generalist in a setting that has exceeded expectations. “The practice is well-supported, with lovely teams, dedicated nurses, great equipment, and really good online systems.”

Though still adjusting to the Australian healthcare system, she’s finding it rewarding. She remains passionate about aged care, her special interest back in South Africa, and is also drawn to mental health, women’s health, and chronic disease management.

The transition has gone smoothly for the family. “So far, so good. The kids have settled in particularly well. We’re meeting people slowly.” They’ve embraced the similarities in lifestyle, outdoor living, exercise, good food, and are enjoying the differences as well. The local environment has been a highlight. “The beaches are beautiful and the facilities for children are fantastic. Plus, the fresh produce is incredible.”

To international doctors considering the move, she offers practical advice:

“Go as quickly as the process allows.”

“Understand the costs involved.”

“Find a town or clinic where you can see yourself and your family settling in.”

Despite the adjustments, she has no regrets. “It’s been absolutely worth it. We’ve embarked on a journey that will hopefully lead to many opportunities. It’s an experience I’m very grateful we’ve had, and we’ll look back on and know we made the right decision for our family.”
