GP Journeys: From Sri Lanka to Hamilton, VIC

For Dr Bihan, moving from his fast-paced life in Colombo, Sri Lanka to the close-knit community of Hamilton, Victoria (MMM4), was more than just a relocation, it was the start of a new chapter marked by balance, belonging, and a deeper connection to patients and community.

Inspired by Family and Community

Dr Bihan’s passion for general practice was sparked at a young age. Growing up, he would spend school holidays with his grandfather, a much-loved GP in rural Sri Lanka.

“Watching my grandfather work was inspiring. He wasn’t just a doctor; he was a part of the community. People trusted him and I knew early on that I wanted to have that kind of impact one day,” Dr Bihan recalls.

That early inspiration remained a constant throughout his journey, shaping his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Sri Lanka, guiding his 17-year tenure with the Ministry of Health, and influencing his clinical work across the UK and Oman.

While his career offered a wealth of experience across diverse healthcare systems, he always felt a strong pull toward a more community-focused setting, where he could build lasting relationships and make a deeper impact.

Choosing Australia, and Hamilton

Life in Colombo was rewarding but intense. Between hectic hours, traffic congestion, and long commutes, Dr Bihan began to crave a slower, more meaningful pace. He also wanted to be part of a community where he could build long-term patient relationships. As the Chief Examiner of the College of General Practitioners in Sri Lanka, Dr Bihan had already made significant contributions to the profession, shaping the standards of general practice training and assessment. He was ready for a new challenge, one that still allowed him to make a real impact, but in a more balanced and connected environment.

Dr Bihan made the move to Australia through the RACGP’s Specialist Pathway Specialist Recognition Program, a route designed for experienced international GPs with comparable qualifications. His successful completion of the International Membership with the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP[UK]) was a crucial step, allowing him to have his skills formally recognised and obtain AHPRA registration. This pathway allowed him to transition into the Australian healthcare system confidently, building on his strong foundation of international clinical experience.

“Having DXC Medical’s support to acquire my visa and assist with all of the required documentation for work and relocation, was the best decision I made,” praised Dr Bihan.

“From the start, DXC Medical were incredible, especially Nethmi. Nothing was ever an issue. She kept me on track and supported me every step of the way, from registration to choosing the right practice and even settling in. I always felt like I had someone in my corner. Nethmi truly exceeded expectations by personally meeting with me in Sri Lanka in May 2024 and again in January 2025, which made a huge difference and gave me great confidence throughout the process.”

When the opportunity with Hamilton Family Practice, came up, it ticked every box, professionally and personally.

A Warm Welcome and a New Way of Life

The contrast between Colombo and Hamilton was immediate.

“In Colombo, my daily commute was one and a half hours. Now, I walk to work in five minutes,” Dr Bihan says. “It’s made such a difference to my lifestyle and mental wellbeing.”

Even before arriving in Australia, his new practice manager and team went above and beyond to make him feel welcome. They helped him get to know the town and even signed him up to the local cricket club before he touched down.

“That meant so much. I knew people were looking forward to meeting me before I even arrived.”

Embracing Rural General Practice

Dr Bihan is now working towards Fellowship and thriving in a rural general practice environment that offers variety, autonomy, and deep community connections.

“I love the broad scope of practice and the continuity of care. I’m not just treating conditions, I’m getting to know people and their families. That’s the kind of medicine I always wanted to practise.”

Looking to the Future

Now settling into life in Hamilton, Dr Bihan is enjoying the slower pace of life. The support from his practice, the relaxed lifestyle, and the warmth of the community have all combined to create the fulfilling life he always envisioned. Although his family are yet to join him, he eagerly looks forward to reuniting with his son towards the end of the year, once his final high school exams are completed. In the meantime, he remains grateful for technology that keeps them closely connected.

“Making the decision to move countries is both daunting and exciting, but with the right support, it became one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From the very beginning, the team at DXC Medical, guided me through every step of the process with patience, clarity, and genuine care. I never felt like I was doing it alone. And once I arrived in Hamilton, the warmth of the community and the incredible support from my practice made all the difference. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped me feel welcomed.”
