GP Journeys: From the Philippines to the South West Region, WA

For many internationally trained doctors, moving abroad represents both a professional leap and a deeply personal journey. For Dr April Rose Uba, a Family Medicine specialist from the Philippines, relocating to Australia has opened the door to a fulfilling GP career, a more settled lifestyle, and a new chapter for her family in the beautiful South West region of Western Australia.

Dr Uba completed her Doctor of Medicine at Ateneo de Cagayan–Xavier University in the Philippines before pursuing specialist training in Family Medicine.

Her motivation to become a GP has always been rooted in continuity of care, “I love the idea of caring for the whole person over many years. As a family doctor, I get to know patients and their families well. This allows me to focus on prevention and keeping people healthy for the long term.”

Why Australia?

Like many international doctors, the promise of a well-structured and well-supported health system strongly influenced her decision.

“I was motivated by the chance to work in Australia’s excellent health system and enjoy the great lifestyle here.”

When considering where in Australia to settle, the choice became clear. The South West region of WA offered the perfect blend of lifestyle, climate, and convenience. A Mediterranean feel, beautiful natural surroundings, and the comfort of being only 6.5 hours from home. With a similar time zone to the Philippines, staying connected with family was an added bonus.

Discovering DXC Medical

Dr Uba first came across DXC Medical while exploring GP roles online.

“Their offers were so promising. When I visited the website, it was clear, professional, and easy to navigate. I especially liked the Australian map showing all the job vacancies.”

This led her to reach out and ultimately begin the journey from enquiry to permanent residency and practice placement.

Navigating the Move

What initially sounded like a daunting process, registrations, paperwork, pathways, visas, quickly became manageable with the right guidance.

“The process sounded very complicated, but with the amazing assistance of DXC Medical, it was made simple. They found job options based on my preferences and secured a direct permanent residence sponsorship.”

Like many IMGs, the biggest challenges were the fees (visa and RACGP program) and the waiting periods. But with patience, and continuous support, everything came together.

Her experience with DXC Medical is something she speaks about with genuine warmth:

“They supported me like a mother guiding me. They gave me pre-filled forms, helped me understand what to do next, and reminded me what was missing. They respond immediately. A special mention to Adelene Chew, who was there from the beginning until now, and the rest of the team.”

A New Role in Western Australia

Today, Dr Uba is proudly working as a GP at Leschenault Medical Centre, where she has embraced the structure and support of Australian general practice.

She quickly noticed the strong emphasis on primary healthcare, preventive medicine, and collaboration:

“The most rewarding part is having the time to give high-quality, thorough care. What surprised me most was the teamwork between the GP, nurses, and staff.”

With a growing interest in Geriatric Medicine, she is already looking forward to developing future special interests as part of her Australian GP career.

Settling Into Life in the South West

The transition for her family has been “wonderful and smooth,” with everyone quickly embracing their new surroundings. Weekends are spent exploring beaches and parks, and her child has developed a particular love for the local milk from the Shire of Harvey, something that brings a big smile to the family.

Lifestyle differences have also been a welcome change:

“People really value work-life balance here. The community is very welcoming and friendly.”

Of course, every move comes with adjustments, professionally, learning referral pathways and medication brand names; personally, adapting to Aussie slang.

Advice for Other International GPs

When asked what she would say to others considering the move, her message is simple:

“Be brave and do it! Start the paperwork early and trust the process. Find a great agency like DXC Medical. The professional reward and quality of life are worth it.”

And would she recommend the journey she’s taken?

“Yes, absolutely! It has allowed me to grow professionally, secure a better future for my family, and practice medicine in a system that truly supports its doctors.”

A shared move, professionally and personally. For Dr Htet and Dr Naychi, the decision to move to Australia wasn’t just about career progression, it was about building a life together. The husband-and-wife GP team began exploring their move in late 2023, after several years living and working in the UK. Like many international relocations, their journey required careful planning, patience, and a willingness to navigate a process that doesn’t always move in straight lines.
