GP Journeys: From the UK to Adelaide, SA

  • September 25, 2025

Dr Adebiyi Babajide’s (Dr JD) medical journey spans three continents. He began his career in Nigeria, graduating from the University of Ilorin in 2010 and gaining experience across both public and private hospitals. In 2018, he moved to the United Kingdom, where he trained and worked as a GP in Herefordshire, further advancing his skills and expertise. Earlier this year, he and his family made the life-changing move to Australia, settling in Adelaide to continue his career in general practice while enjoying a new lifestyle in a family-friendly, coastal suburb.

In the UK, Dr JD worked as a specialty doctor in the emergency department for two years before embarking on his GP training. He trained in Herefordshire at Wye Valley County Hospital, later joining the Hereford Medical Group as a fully qualified GP, where he worked for an additional two years. His time in the UK solidified his skills and prepared him for a more flexible, patient-centered career in general practice.

The Inspiration to Become a GP

Dr JD credits a chance encounter with a GP registrar during his UK training as a pivotal moment in his career. He admired the calm, confident approach to patient care and realised that general practice would offer him the flexibility to make a real difference in patients’ lives while providing a better work-life balance. “It gives me the flexibility to work anywhere, unlike being in emergency medicine, which is more specialised,” he explains.

Why Australia?

The decision to relocate to Australia was motivated by both professional and personal factors. Dr JD wanted a lifestyle that allowed him to balance work and family, while offering his children access to quality education and opportunities for growth. Adelaide, South Australia, felt like the perfect fit. “It’s very family-oriented, calm, and relaxed, similar to Herefordshire, but with better weather and a coastal lifestyle,” he says.

The Relocation Experience

Dr JD connected with DXC Medical last year to explore the Expedited Specialist Pathway, which he was eligible for. With support from the DXC Medical team, particularly Brad, his relocation process was smooth and supportive. From securing housing to setting up bank accounts, Dr JD highlights the extra mile DXC Medical went to ensure he and his family settled comfortably.

“It wasn’t just about the professional side of things, it was about getting us here safely, helping us settle in, and making us feel supported,” he says. “I honestly can’t thank Brad enough. He went above and beyond in every way, and I’m grateful to now call him a friend.”

Settling in South Australia

Dr JD and his family are now based in a picturesque coastal suburb of Adelaide, nice and close to his new practice, Grand Medical Seaford. He’s excited to continue developing his skills, particularly in minor procedures, and possibly aesthetic medicine. He also looks forward to exploring the unique aspects of the Australian healthcare system, from local referral pathways to the nuances of prescription practices.

Advice for Other International Doctors

Dr JD encourages other international doctors considering Australia to take the leap,

“It’s a fantastic professional opportunity, and the support you get makes a big difference. Don’t be afraid to move somewhere a little quieter and more relaxed, it can be the perfect place to work and raise a family.”

Looking Ahead

For Dr JD, the move to Adelaide is the start of an exciting new chapter. Professionally, he’s ready to bring his wealth of experience to general practice, and personally, he’s eager to explore life in South Australia with his wife and children.

With his family by his side and the support of a welcoming medical community, Dr JD is set to thrive in Australia, proving that bold moves can lead to fulfilling opportunities both in medicine and in life.

A big thank you to Dr JD for sharing his GP journey. We look forward to seeing his career flourish and his family settle into life in beautiful South Australia.
