A Locum Journey Across Continents: Dr Amal’s Annual Return to Australia
Each year, Dr Amal travels across the globe from the UK to undertake a locum placement in Australia, a journey not just of miles, but of purpose, passion, and professional curiosity. With an extensive medical background and a commitment to exploring diverse healthcare systems, Dr Amal brings not only his clinical skills but a reflective, human touch to every placement.
A Dual Life in Medicine
Dr Amal’s medical journey began in the UK, where he completed his training in obstetrics and gynaecology before moving into general practice. Holding both MRCGP(UK) and fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP), allowing him to transition between healthcare systems in the UK and Australia.
"I work as a GP in the UK, but each year I make the trip to Australia to work as a locum GP. It’s a unique opportunity to gain insight into how healthcare is delivered in different settings," Dr Amal explains.
Exploring Australia Through Locum Work
Over the past few years, Dr Amal has completed multiple locum placements through DXC Medical, including Victoria and more recently in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, where he worked in an Aboriginal Medical Centre.
“This is my third visit to Australia and each time I’ve returned through DXC Medical” he says.
Dr Amal appreciates the short-term intensity and cultural richness of locum work.
“With locum work, you’re there for a limited time, so you give your absolute best. You learn quickly, adapt fast, and really immerse yourself, not just in the medical environment but in the local community.”
A Life-Changing Experience in Aboriginal Health
One of the most impactful experiences of his career came through his placement in the Pilbara.
“I’d previously encountered a few Aboriginal patients while working in Melbourne, but I was struck by the complexity of their health challenges, the disparity in health outcomes and access to services,” Dr Amal reflects.
Working in a remote Aboriginal health setting gave him a deeper understanding of health inequity.
“That placement changed me, not just professionally, but personally. I witnessed firsthand how inequality and marginalisation can profoundly affect people’s health. It gave me a new perspective on the social determinants of health, and the role we play as healthcare providers in addressing them.”
Advice for Fellow GPs Considering Locum Work
For doctors thinking about pursuing locum work in Australia, Dr Amal offers this advice:
“Be prepared, mentally and professionally. Understand that the healthcare system, patient expectations, and medical presentations may differ from what you’re used to. In rural and remote areas, you may face different weather, and sometimes unfamiliar medical conditions like tropical infections. But if you're curious, open-minded, and adventurous, it's an incredibly rewarding experience.”
He also stresses the importance of having the right support system in place.
“Find a good recruitment company that understands your needs and can guide you through the paperwork, registration, and logistics. DXC Medical has been phenomenal. From organising accommodation to sorting out AHPRA and provider numbers, they handled everything.”
Looking Ahead
Dr Amal has no plans of stopping his annual Australian adventures anytime soon.
“I’ve already spoken to Amy at DXC about my next trip,” he says with a smile. “She worked incredibly hard to make this placement happen quickly and smoothly. I trust her, and I know we’ll line something up again soon.”
A Final Word
In a world where healthcare often feels impersonal, Dr Amal’s journey is a refreshing reminder of the heart that drives medicine. His annual visits are more than just work trips; they’re a testament to the power of curiosity, compassion, and cross-cultural learning.
As he returns to the UK with memories and new insights, we look forward to welcoming Dr Amal back to Australia again soon.
