MRCGP (CCT) vs MRCGP [International]: What’s the Difference?

For many doctors planning a move to Australia, one of the most common areas of confusion is the difference between the UK MRCGP with CCT and the MRCGP [International] (South Asia) certification, especially when it comes to recognition with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

Here’s a clear breakdown of what you need to know.

MRCGP (CCT) – United Kingdom

The MRCGP (CCT) is awarded upon successful completion of an approved UK GP training program and is considered the gold standard for general practice qualification in the UK.

Key facts:

• Recognised by RACGP as Substantially Comparable (when all key criteria are met).
• Eligible applicants can enter the PEP Specialist Stream, typically completing a 6-month program without needing to sit FRACGP exams.
• If obtained after August 2007, it also qualifies doctors to apply via the Expedited Specialist Pathway (ESP) through AHPRA.

In short: this pathway offers the most streamlined route to practising as a GP in Australia, with access to a wider range of MMM1/DPA locations and no FRACGP exam requirement.

MRCGP [International] (South Asia)

The MRCGP [International] was developed to bring UK-aligned standards to international contexts such as South Asia. However, it differs significantly in its training structure.

Key facts:

• Focuses on the academic (written) components of MRCGP, without UK-based clinical training.
• Recognised by RACGP as Partially Comparable.
• Typically requires a 24-month program including additional assessments, such as the FRACGP exams, before Fellowship can be achieved.

In practice: while still a respected qualification, this pathway involves a longer and more assessment-heavy route to Fellowship compared to the UK MRCGP (CCT).

How RACGP Assesses Comparability (PEP Part A)

RACGP evaluates overseas qualifications based on three core areas of equivalence:

1. Curriculum studied
2. Training route completed
3. Context of practice

To be recognised as Substantially Comparable, applicants must meet all three criteria.
If any area falls short, the outcome will be Partial Comparability, extending the program duration and assessment requirements.
