After years working across hospital and acute care settings, making the transition into general practice can feel like a significant professional shift. For Dr Sumon Wai, the move from hospital medicine in New South Wales to community-based general practice in Western Australia has been both rewarding and transformative.
Now practising as a GP in regional WA, Dr Wai’s story highlights the value of continuity of care, lifestyle balance, and having the right support when moving from hospital to practice.
A Global Medical Background
Dr Wai completed medical training in Myanmar and built a strong clinical foundation working across both hospital and primary care settings. She later moved to the United Kingdom, where she gained further experience across a range of hospital-based and primary care roles.
In 2024, Dr Wai relocated to Australia and commenced work at Gosford Hospital in New South Wales.
With more than nine years of experience across emergency medicine, general medicine, surgery, women’s health, and paediatrics, Dr Wai developed strong skills in acute care, multidisciplinary teamwork, and evidence-based practice, all of which have been invaluable in her transition into general practice.
Why General Practice?
Dr Wai was drawn to general practice because of the continuity of care and the opportunity to support patients across all stages of life.
“I enjoy the breadth of medicine, building long-term doctor–patient relationships, and making a meaningful impact within the community,” she said.
Her earlier experience working in primary care reinforced a strong interest in chronic disease management and preventive healthcare, key pillars of Australian general practice.
Choosing Australia
Australia offered an appealing combination of professional opportunity and lifestyle.
A well-structured healthcare system, strong support for primary care, and an excellent work–life balance were all key motivators for Dr Wai’s decision to relocate.
Before transitioning into general practice, she worked in hospital-based roles at Gosford Hospital, gaining valuable experience across acute and general medicine, emergency care, and other inpatient specialties, providing a strong foundation for his move into community-based practice.
Finding the Right Support
While searching for GP roles in Australia, Dr Wai came across DXC Medical.
“They have a very strong reputation for supporting both local and international doctors through the transition into practice,” she shared. “From the first conversation, the approach felt personalised and professional.”

That confidence quickly translated into a smooth and well-supported transition.
A Smooth Transition from Hospital to Practice
Having already secured medical registration, the key requirement for Dr Wai was organising her provider number. With clear guidance from DXC Medical, the process was managed efficiently.
Despite relocating interstate, DXC Medical provided valuable advice on relocation and location selection, ensuring the move was straightforward and stress-free. Based in Western Australia, DXC Medical’s Adelene Chew provided invaluable support, offering extensive knowledge of the WA GP landscape, helping Dr Wai navigate the transition with confidence and clarity.
“There were no unexpected challenges,” Dr Wai said. “Having clear guidance and timely advice made the entire process seamless.”
Support throughout the entire journey
DXC Medical’s support extended well beyond paperwork.
“DXC Medical supported me throughout the entire journey, from role selection to settling into practice,” Dr Wai explained. “Adelene was particularly helpful. She took the time to explain every step clearly, answered all my questions patiently, and helped me find a role that matched my personal preferences.”
This personalised support made settling into general practice significantly easier.
Life as a GP in Bunbury, WA
Dr Wai is now working as a GP in Bunbury, transitioning from hospital-based medicine into community-focused care.
“The role is varied and allows me to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care within the community,” she said.
Compared to healthcare systems she previously worked in, Dr Wai has found Australia’s strong emphasis on preventive care, chronic disease management, and multidisciplinary collaboration particularly rewarding. She also noted the level of structure and resourcing within Australian general practice as a positive and encouraging surprise.
Her current areas of interest include chronic disease management, women’s health, and holistic patient care, areas she plans to continue developing as her GP career progresses.
Family, Lifestyle & Community
The transition has also been a positive one on a personal level.
While interstate relocation naturally comes with adjustments, Australia has proven to be a welcoming and family-friendly environment. A strong focus on wellbeing, outdoor living, and community connection has been a refreshing change.
Outside of work, Dr Wai and her partner enjoy exploring local beaches, parks, and cafés, making the most of the relaxed lifestyle that regional Western Australia offers.
Reflections & Advice
Professionally, the biggest adjustment for Dr Wai was shifting from hospital-based, episodic care to continuity-focused, preventive medicine. Personally, adapting to a new place required adjustment, but has been a rewarding experience.
For other international doctors considering a move to Australia and the transition from hospital to general practice, her advice is clear:
“Plan early, stay organised, and seek support from experienced recruiters like DXC Medical. Having the right guidance makes a significant difference. Being open to learning and adapting to a new system is key.”
Would she recommend the journey?
“Absolutely. While it requires commitment and patience, the professional fulfilment, lifestyle benefits, and long-term opportunities make it a highly worthwhile journey. With the right support, the transition is both achievable and rewarding.”
