GP Supervisor Payments Explained: What Financial Support Is Available?

GP Supervisor Payments Explained: What Financial Support Is Available?

  • November 2, 2026

Thinking about supervising a GP registrar? Here's what you need to know about RACGP Fellowship Support Program (FSP) supervisor payments, teaching requirements and financial support.

Supervising a GP registrar is an opportunity to share your clinical experience, support the next generation of General Practitioners and contribute to the future of Australian primary healthcare.

However, for GPs and practices considering taking on a registrar, one of the most common questions is: What payments are available for GP supervisors?

While supervision involves a commitment of time, teaching and ongoing assessment, financial support is available through the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

Here's a breakdown of the supervisor payments available under the Fellowship Support Program (FSP).

How Much Do GP Supervisors Get Paid?

The RACGP provides payments to eligible FSP supervisors for completing required educational supervision, in-practice teaching and registrar progress reports.

Under the published FSP supervisor payment schedule, the following payments apply:

Supervisor Activity

Payment

Early Assessment for Safety and Learning (EASL) – GPT1

$1,500 + GST and super

In-practice teaching – GPT1 and GPT2

$300 + GST and super per month

In-practice teaching – GPT3 and GPT4

$150 + GST and super per month

End-of-term progress report

$150 + GST and super per report

These payments recognise the time and expertise supervisors contribute to supporting registrars throughout their training.

Understanding the Supervisor Payment Requirements

  1. Early Assessment for Safety and Learning (EASL) – $1,500

During GPT1, supervisors are required to complete the Early Assessment for Safety and Learning (EASL).

This involves 10 hours of educational supervision, together with the required assessments and documentation.

The EASL process helps establish a registrar's clinical capabilities, identify learning needs and develop an appropriate supervision plan.

Payment: $1,500 + GST and super, following completion and finalisation of the required activities.

  1. In-Practice Teaching – $300 or $150 Per Month

Supervisors also receive payments for providing structured educational supervision throughout the registrar's training.

For GPT1 and GPT2, supervisors are required to provide a minimum of one hour of educational supervision per fortnight, attracting a payment of $300 + GST and super per month.

For GPT3 and GPT4, the requirement reduces to a minimum of one hour per month, attracting $150 + GST and super per month.

Teaching may include reviewing clinical cases, discussing patient management, providing feedback and helping registrars develop their clinical decision-making skills.

  1. End-of-Term Progress Reports – $150

At the end of each training term, supervisors are required to complete a progress report assessing the registrar's development and performance.

These reports provide valuable feedback and help identify areas where further learning or support may be required.

Payment: $150 + GST and super per completed report.

How Are GP Supervisor Payments Made?

For eligible FSP supervision activities, payments are made directly by the RACGP into the supervisor's nominated bank account.

There is no requirement to submit separate payment claims.

However, supervisors must ensure all required assessments, teaching activities and reports are completed and submitted correctly.

Important payment deadlines include:

  • EASL: Must be completed within the first three months of GPT1.
  • End-of-term reports: Must be submitted within six weeks of the training term ending.
  • In-practice teaching: Must meet the minimum teaching requirements for the relevant training term.

Failure to meet the required deadlines may result in payments not being made.

Why Become a GP Supervisor?

Beyond the financial support, supervising a registrar offers significant professional and personal rewards.

It provides an opportunity to mentor developing GPs, share valuable clinical knowledge and contribute to a stronger, more sustainable general practice workforce.

For medical practices, welcoming a registrar can also support workforce development, strengthen teaching culture and create opportunities to build long-term relationships with future Fellows.

With ongoing demand for GP supervisors, particularly across regional and rural Australia, experienced GPs have an important role to play in supporting the next generation of doctors.
