Are you a qualified Family Medicine specialist from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore or Thailand? Your experience and qualifications could open the door to a new career in Australian general practice.
Australia offers internationally qualified doctors the opportunity to develop their careers while enjoying a different lifestyle, working environment and range of professional opportunities.
At DXC Medical Recruitment, we're connecting with internationally qualified GPs who are considering making Australia their next career destination.
We are particularly interested in speaking with doctors who hold specialist Family Medicine qualifications from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Whether you're actively preparing to relocate or simply interested in understanding your options, exploring the opportunities available is a great place to start.
Malaysia
- Member of the Academy of Family Physicians
- Master in Family Medicine, National University of Malaysia
Philippines
- Diplomate in Family Medicine
Singapore
- Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
Thailand
- Diploma of the Thai Board of Family Medicine
These qualifications represent specialist education and training in Family Medicine, with doctors bringing valuable experience in primary care, chronic disease management, preventive health and continuity of patient care.
Australian general practices are interested in connecting with experienced internationally qualified doctors who can contribute their clinical knowledge and experience to local communities.
Important: The qualifications listed above are of recruitment interest and are not necessarily recognised as equivalent to Australian specialist GP qualifications. Each doctor's eligibility for Australian medical registration and the relevant assessment pathway must be determined individually.
Understanding Your Pathway to Practising as a GP in Australia
One of the first questions internationally qualified doctors ask is:
Will my Family Medicine qualification be recognised in Australia?
The answer depends on several factors, including your qualifications, specialist training, clinical experience, country of training and the registration pathway for which you are eligible.
Australia has several registration pathways for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). You can read more about the Pathways here.
What Opportunities Are Available for International GPs?
Australia offers a diverse range of general practice settings, from established metropolitan medical centres to regional and rural communities.
Depending on your registration eligibility, experience and professional interests, opportunities may include:
Metropolitan General Practice
Work in established practices across Australia's major cities, often with access to multidisciplinary healthcare teams, nursing support and a broad patient demographic.
Regional and Coastal Communities
Explore opportunities in regional centres and coastal communities, where practices may offer an appealing combination of professional development, community connection and lifestyle.
Rural and Remote General Practice
For doctors interested in providing healthcare in communities with greater workforce needs, rural and remote Australia can offer varied clinical experience and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
Some locations may also offer additional incentives or support arrangements, depending on the employer and the doctor's eligibility.
Understanding DPA and MMM Locations in Australia
When exploring GP opportunities in Australia, internationally qualified doctors will often come across two important classifications: Distribution Priority Area (DPA) and Modified Monash Model (MMM).
DPA identifies locations with a relative shortage of GP services. For many overseas-trained doctors, working in a DPA location is important due to Medicare provider number restrictions under section 19AB.
MMM classifies locations from MMM1 (metropolitan) to MMM7 (very remote), based on geographical remoteness and town size. These classifications can influence eligibility for certain workforce programs and financial incentives.
Importantly, DPA and MMM are separate classifications, and some metropolitan (MMM1) locations also hold DPA status.
At DXC Medical Recruitment, we can help you explore suitable GP opportunities across metropolitan, regional and rural Australia, based on your qualifications, registration eligibility and lifestyle preferences.

What About Visas and Relocation?
Relocating internationally involves more than finding a suitable GP position.
Doctors may also need to consider:
- Medical registration: Understanding the relevant pathway, documentation, assessment and supervision requirements.
- English language requirements: Meeting the Medical Board of Australia's applicable English language skills registration standard.
- Visa options: Exploring appropriate employer-sponsored or other eligible visa pathways.
- Location and lifestyle: Considering schools, housing, transport, family needs and preferred communities.
- Practice suitability: Finding an employer that can accommodate any required supervision, registration conditions and professional development needs.
Starting these conversations early can help doctors better understand the steps, potential costs and realistic timeframes involved in relocating.
