Practice Bound: From Campbelltown Hospital to Vincentia

Practice Bound: From Campbelltown Hospital to Vincentia

  • June 20, 2025

After beginning her medical career in Sri Lanka and navigating diverse clinical experiences, Dr Buddhima’s journey has taken her from busy emergency rooms to a fulfilling life as a General Practitioner in Vincentia, New South Wales, a stunning seaside town in the Shoalhaven region.

Dr Buddhima began her medical career in Sri Lanka in late 2015. Starting with a robust internship in medicine and surgery, she went on to work in obstetrics and gynaecology, then moving across to work at an Eye Hospital and in Mental health. This extensive clinical exposure helped lay a strong foundation for her future in general practice.

In 2022, she and her family made the bold decision to migrate to Australia. “When I moved, I had completed only AMC Part 1,” she recalls. “I started my Australian career in Campbelltown Hospital as an unaccredited emergency doctor while working toward Part 2.”

Despite initially enjoying emergency medicine, she soon found the environment overly demanding and less supportive. “I realised the emergency department wasn’t right for me long-term,” she explains. “That’s when Shayla helped me explore general practice, and it’s been life changing.”

Now settled in the Shoalhaven and practicing as a GP, Dr Buddhima is thriving, professionally and personally. “My husband and friends noticed a real difference in my mood and energy once I started in general practice. I enjoy my work and have more time for my children and family.”

She highlights the unique benefits of working in general practice: “As GPs, we can provide holistic care. Unlike emergency, where we treat and discharge without follow-up, here we build ongoing relationships with our patients. And I have weekends and evenings free to spend with my family.”

Her daughter is doing well in school, and her younger son is preparing for kindergarten. Her husband’s job sees him only having to commute into Sydney once per week, which is very manageable with the convenient trainline. “We go on family outings every weekend. It’s a big contrast from my previous hospital schedule.”

For many internationally trained doctors, the transition from hospital to GP practice in Australia can be daunting. Dr Buddhima acknowledges this, citing the shift in medical focus as the biggest adjustment.

“In emergency, you rely on acute care skills. But in general practice, you manage chronic conditions, preventive care, vaccinations, and mental health,” she says. “I had to refresh my knowledge in many areas. Courses in contraception and mental health were especially helpful.”

She encourages other IMGs to seek out education and support: “Don’t hesitate to take courses. They help bridge knowledge gaps and build confidence.”

For doctors considering the move to Australia, Dr Buddhima offers heartfelt advice: “If possible, get some hospital experience first. It helps you become a better GP. Also, don't delay your move, the earlier you start, the sooner you can adjust and settle.”

While many international doctors aim to work in Sydney, she recommends being open to regional opportunities. “The Shoalhaven has everything we need. You’re not being sent to the middle of nowhere. These towns are developed, with great schools and healthcare systems, and realistically is not a long distance into Sydney anyway.”

She adds, “Even in Campbelltown, we rarely went to Sydney city, regional areas offer a better scope of practice, more patients, and less commute stress.”

Throughout her journey, Dr Buddhima credits Shayla from DXC for her incredible support. “I’m terrible at job searching,” she laughs. “But Shayla helped me every step of the way, from updating my CV to supporting my PR application. I give her five stars!”

Now enrolled in the RVTS (Remote Vocational Training Scheme), Dr Buddhima is excited for the future. “I’m so happy. From our practice, three of us were selected. It’s a great opportunity to continue learning and growing.”

Today, Dr Buddhima stands as a testament to the rewards of flexibility, perseverance, and openness to new opportunities. Her move to Australia, shift to general practice, and life in the Shoalhaven have all contributed to a happier, more balanced lifestyle, one that other international doctors may find deeply inspiring.
